All About Halloween

It’s the time of the year again, where the fancy costumes will come out and children will indulge themselves into trick and treat, party animals will be partying till the wee hours or just stuffing your mouth with a handful of candies.

So what is Halloween?

Traditionally, Halloween has been known as All Hallow’s Evening and it falls on the 31st October every year and is observed as a celebration in a number of countries across the globe.

Hollween History

Dating back to the ancient European traditions, Halloween has been originated from the ancient Gaelic Festival, Samhain. It was a day to celebrate the end of the harvesting season which means “Summer’s end”.

Historically, the Gaels thought that there were walls between the spiritual realm and the world and these walls were quite thin. The Gaels feared that the crops would be damaged and so they decided to set up places at their dinner tables for all the spirits and would light bonfires to scare off all the evil spirits off.

Later on, the trick or treating came up from the 16th century in the country of Ireland, Scotland and Wales. People started to ask for food in exchange for a poem or a song and would dress up in scary costumes and impersonate their souls like the dead to protect themselves.

Why to celebrate Halloween?

It started to commercialize as a festival over the time with strong influences of the pop culture and is now celebrated by both children as well as adults.
