Now You Can Ride in a Tesla Taxi in Dubai

Back in the month of February there were reports that RTA would be buying around 200 cars from electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla. The first 50 vehicles out of 200 of them have officially been distributed to the Dubai taxi fleet.

Back in the month of February there were reports that RTA would be buying around 200 cars from electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla.

Of course, we cannot lie that we all were too excited upon hearing this news. The fun that we would have on cruising down The Sheikh Zayed Road at the back of a Tesla car would be super fun and sleek. We all dreamed for it to be true and here it is. The good news is that this dream is going to come true – The first 50 vehicles out of 200 of them have officially been distributed to the Dubai taxi fleet.

The official launch of these Tesla cars was held outside the Dubai International Airport at the entrance of the Terminal 3, in the presence of HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al Maktoum – President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority along with the other authorities and officials from the government.

The Model S (which is known for being the safest vehicle till date and can over the longest distance) and Model X (an SUV car best known for its fitted falcon wing doors and panoramic windshield) have been added and are the two types of vehicles that the commuters and travelers can expect to ride in, as a mode of transportation in Dubai. After this initial slot of 50 vehicles, a further of 75 vehicles will be added in 2018 and another batch of 75 vehicles will be added in the year 2019.

All the vehicles are said to be well-equipped with hardware needed for the self-driving capability that would be greater than the level of a human driver.

The deployment of these Tesla cars replicate a Green Economy for sustainable development which is an initiative taken by Shaikh Mohammed. The Dubai Smart Autonomous Mobile strategy aims at converting around 25 percent of the total journeys of a commuter into a driverless journey by the year 2030.

The Dubai Taxi Corporation coordinated with parties to provide the right and adequate infrastructure to ensure the operation of these Tesla vehicles including the provision of around 13 electric recharging stations.

Apart from having robotic electric vehicles, Tesla also has a new and unique series of power generation with power pack technologies and batteries. When all the three key components – electric cars, renewable energy and batteries are combined, it will leave a positive impact on the world and in Dubai.
