Running right from the Central Swiss to the alpine village of Stoos, this new funicular has just replaced the one from 1933.
So, what is a funicular ride?
It’s an inclined plane or a cliff railway, mostly a type of a cable car, in which the cable is attached to a pair of tram like vehicles that ascends and descends on a steep slope while counterbalancing each other.
Just right at time of the winter ski season to kick in, Switzerland opened this steepest funicular in the Swiss Alps to the public. The track distance between the Central Swiss town of Schwyz to the alpine village of Stoos, will make you feel like you are going straight up the 104-Story World Trade Centre, a minimum of two times.
The Swiss engineering and technology have reached new heights with the opening of this funicular. It’s a triumph of modern engineering design. There are in total of four cabins, each of which have a carrying capacity of 34 passengers at a time. Despite its rotational movement, the cabins remain horizontal and the passengers remain upright through the entire journey.
It’s not as scary as it may seem to you; but it’s damn crazy!
The track passes through the side of the mountains for some of the trip, and climbs up to 743m in total and takes about 4 minutes to reach to its final destination point. It took around 14 years in the construction of the Stoos Bahn and its worth is around £40 Million.
